Not a whole lot of reports coming back in for the Oak but now with flows that are a little more easily drifted guys should be into a few browns or steelhead. Ground flow recharge from strong supplies might keep things up a little higher then typical winter levels but never-the-less things will be icing in or freezing up except for a few fast water slots. Back on the retreat thru today after a cold night. The gate at the top of the driveway will be closed at 2PM for no entry after that. A cooler, gloomy day today (Monday) with forecasted warmer days ahead mid week with chance of precipitation and windy conditions around Wed, Thurs. The next spate of water could bring in the fresh spring steelhead looking for warmer water. Suspect some pressure has shifted to other area smaller waterways. Seasonable cold today and dropping back below freezing tonight then a nice warmup mid week with chance of rain showers. The other area smaller tribs have med to slightly high flows with slightly stained water color. That could be the ticket to get some salmon migrations cranking. Classic drifting, not so much. The trout follow the salmon looking for an egg meal. (Deadline for the Open was Monday, 6/7). Look for improving action thru the month with cooling weather or cooperating wind and waves and water color. Started in fairly shallow 80-120FOW and got some nice kings first thing in the morning but things slowed. Conditions were ideal with stained river water and dirty near shore Lake waters on northwest winds for cover for the fish to disperse. . Access fees will be waived. Walleye fishing has been good on the Niagara Bar. Canal feed should be continued there so if we find out any intel for that we will pass along. On the south end of Newark has been a great place for catching bass. After that for end of week and weekend, the forecast is back to cold temps and another round of measurable snow. With the mid week warm-up, look for flows to be on the rise and opening up some and going off color about thru the mid/end of week. Flows in the Oak look slightly high consisting of all turbine water with maybe 6 inches of viz. To the east, like at Sandy Creek, the higher Canal bolstered flows have made for better migration conditions with pods of salmon bolting from the estuary holding water and spreading upstream, along with a few browns mixed in.. The first will be a 1 day event July 10th. New migrations of fresh fish could come anytime during this part of the season with good flows or especially with any bump up in trib flows. The other area smaller waterways have also bumped up in flows to medium-ish to the west and slightly high and stained to the east. Chance of even warmer unseasonable temps for next week. Parking will not be allowed at anytime on the road at the top of the driveway and therefore no walk in access down the driveway. Flows in the Oak are staying high with some stubborn overflow water that should be receding by about today leaving just the full cranking turbine flows. Some forecasted showers that for once turned into more like rainstorms yesterday and today have brought along that nice gloom for fish migrations, but probably will not change any trib flows much. Chance of rain/snow showers for the mid part of this week with forecasted mixed bag precipitation of rain, sleet and snow thru the end part of the week. Most all fish in real nice shape, some legit fresh Kings after the last rain which isnt always a sure thing in our area low gradient tribs. If you stayed patient and made some drifts or swings when the good flows returned by mid Apr you could be rewarded with a hungry drop back steelhead. The Greater Niagara Fish Odyssey is slowly catching on with the new Fishing Chaos app and there are 7 different fish species categories up for grabs in both the adult and the youth divisions. Hopefully they can move to and get in and out of the smaller area tribs that they are dredging next with minimal impact on salmon and trout migrations. Then, with 10 days of flat water, along with the number of tournaments & derbies held and the pressure of a lot of fishing boats within a 10 mile x 1 mile stretch, the fish diminished their desire to bite. Civilian small boat trollers reported to be having good brown trout action so that tells me the land lubber casting chances should be good too. Avoid close contact, such as shaking hands, hugging, and kissing. The current leader is a 32 lb 4 oz salmon caught by Zane Smith of New Brighton, PA. For now that is, until any more bigger rains or snows may come. The medium to slightly high flows in the Oak are proving to be a nice draw for Kings. Upstream fast water areas should be pretty well open, and there is likely barely any fishing pressure. A nice mid week weather period now after the holiday weekend with clear and warm days forecast today and tomorrow. Year-Round Notice: There are mandatory personal flotation device (PFD) zones on the river. Boat angling easily the least expensive bargain for big salmonid angling chances where you get to feel the strike and experience an honest battle without heavier trolling gear. On the dates not included above anglers can still fish any of the water adjacent to the Archers Club but access will have to be by walking and wading from downstream at the Park Ave Ext Fishing Trail or from upstream at the Waterport dam and anglers cannot be on the Archers Club grounds only in the immediate bankside water. We are hearing of a few more browns now in the Oak, especially thru yesterday. Will you be there when a chromer moves upstream? Likely there are some steelhead in the Oak now and the drift conditions remain challenging to get on them. Even without any significant new precipitation, look for flows in the Oak to stay up thanks to strong swamp headwater supplies. Bankside movement may be hard in spots if no trail is broken already. Some Lake Effect Snow showers has amounted to a few more inches of fluffy accumulation on top of the 1-2 ft previous snow. So when even a reasonable high and stained water window presents itself, that may be the best time to fish. Most Kings will be spawning or on zombie patrol with the occasional fresher fish. A little more precipitation from the end of the past weekend and beginning part of this week has bumped up the trib flows slightly. The hope is this cold weather will be a good thing for later winter and spring steelhead action. Most action came on our Cannon Downriggers fished 30-50 down with sliders. Best bass spots are downriver around Joseph Davis State Park and Youngstown near Fort Niagara. So we are still in this mostly mild winter pattern. IMO one nice silver fish is worth a whole bunch old upstream darkies. A dropping and clearing water scenario is a contrast for what youd rather see as rising or high flows for best chances at fresh fish migrations. At the release time and thru the following early AM cormorant predation was largely kept in check. She bought him the trip to repay him for taking her fishing when she was young. Slight warm up for the weekend with chance of rain end of weekend and then cold for start of next week. Water temps have flirted with 40F but should slide back with the forecasted colder weather ahead. First timers from Texas, Shawn and Heather had a good morning on Lake Ontario today! The steelhead and coho salmon were both caught on spoons straight out from the Oak Orchard River. Within a few minutes, an 8 lb steelhead hit and Bill was on his first Lake Ontario fish. Good drifts on lighter leads are still scoring some hook ups on some dark and slightly silver fish. For now on the Oak, anglers seem to be hooking up on a few steelhead nearest the dam that came along with the higher flows of a few weeks ago mixed in with a handful of fresh fish trickling in thru the downstream fast water. Water color was stained with probably greater then a foot but less then 2 feet of viz. The longer those fish stay in the overflow pool, they harder they become to get out. Fishing pressure is real light, only a few anglers on the water. The other area smaller tribs I have not laid eyes on directly and should have something like medium flows. 400 Coppers, Divers out 220-240, Riggers down 80-90-100. Working 100-200 fow, It took us a while to get bit, but our first fish was a 17 lb king. Other area smaller waterways will be snowed and frozen in. Windy too, with rain showers but at least no snow from the latest storm here on the WNY Lake Ontario Plain. Not much precipitation was realized for the past weekend, so all the trib flows are on the drop and clearing for now. Id say Im hearing about 50/50 in good/tough fishing.
